YARS mourns loss of a wingman

It is with great sadness that YARS mourns the loss of Technical Sgt. Louis Fusco, who passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013 in Austintown, Ohio. Fusco joined the Air Force Reserve in 2004 and served with the 76th Aerial Port Squadron as a “Port Dawg” here for the last eight years. His career in service to the United States included deployments to Afghanistan and forward operating locations in Southwest Asia. Technical Sgt. 910th conducts aerial spray course

U.S. Air Force Reserve Maj. Pat Fassnacht (right), an aerial-spray qualified pilot, assigned to the 910th Airlift Wing’s 757th Airlift Squadron, talks with a participant of the Department of Defense Aerial Spray Course on the flight deck of one of the wing’s specially-modified, aerial spray capable C-130 aircraft on the flightline at Page Field, Fla., Jan. 15, 2013. The static display of the aircraft and aerial spray equipment was part of the course, which is a certification requirement for pest management specialists involved in the aerial spraying of products designed to destroy disease-carrying creatures. Members of the 910th’s highly-trained aerial spray team, based at Youngstown Air Reserve Station, Ohio, were on hand to answer questions about the aircraft, equipment or the unit’s mission. The 910th is home to DoD’s only aerial spray mission and the team brought their unique knowledge to the course for the benefit of those participating in the event. U.S. Air Force photo by Master Sgt. U.S. Air Force Reserve Lt. Col. Tom Janousek, an entomologist assigned to the 910th Airlift Wing, studies a stack of sample cards, recently sprayed with water, simulating a pesticide solution, by one of the wing’s highly-modified C-130 aircraft during a field exercise that is part of the Department of Defense Aerial Spray Course at the Lee County Mosquito Control District flightline, Lehigh Acres, Fla., Jan. 16, 2013. The purpose of the exercise was to determine how wide of an area on the ground is being effectively treated by an aerial spray aircraft and how effectively the sprayed product is being delivered to the target area. The sample cards hold paper that changes color when hit by water. This reaction aids course participants on the ground to determine the results of the exercise. Completion of the aerial spray course is a certification requirement for pest management specialists involved in the aerial spraying of products designed to destroy disease-carrying creatures. The 910th, based at Youngstown Air Reserve Station, Ohio, is home to DoD’s only aerial spray mission and the team brought their unique knowledge to the course for the benefit of those participating in the event. Four service members delivered the models and other toys to children for the holidays as part of the air station’s ongoing community outreach program and the Marine Corps Toys for Tots campaign. Col. Mark Ables, Capt. Brian Hodor and Master Sgt. YARS works closely with ACHMV to select candidates for the 910th Airlift Wing’s Pilot for a Day program, which welcomes children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses to the installation to be commissioned as an honorary second lieutenant, see various work centers and taxi aboard a C-130 Hercules aircraft. Youngstown Air Reserve Base Community Council, the 910th’s biggest non-profit supporter donated the C-130 models, while other toys came from Toys for Tots donations.
