Colonel Daniel J. Sarachene


Colonel Daniel J. Sarachene is the commander of the 910th Airlift Wing, Youngstown Air Reserve Station, Ohio. As the wing commander, he is responsible for the overall combat readiness of fourteen subordinate units with more than 1,300 assigned personnel and eight assigned C-130H Hercules tactical cargo transport aircraft. He is also responsible for maintaining the Department of Defense’s only large area, fixed-wing aerial spray capability to control disease-carrying insects, pest insects and undesirable vegetation and to disperse oil spills in large bodies of water. Aerial spray missions may be executed in combat areas, on DoD installations or in response to disasters/ emergencies as declared by the President of the United States. As the installation commander, he leads the day-to-day operations and maintenance of a 228-acre facility providing support for the nearly 2,000 assigned Air Force, Navy and Marine Corp Reservists and civil service employees and is responsible for more than $1 billion of federal assets. Colonel Sarachene assumed command on February 1, 2017.

Colonel Sarachene received his commission in October 1990 from Officer's Training School, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He's deployed to and flown missions in SOUTHCOM, NORTHCOM, EUROCOM, CENTCOM and PACCOM supporting numerous operations including; Desert Calm, Provide Promise, Joint Endeavor, Joint Enterprise, Cobra Gold, Coronet Oak, Noble Eagle, Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, Hurricane Andrew Relief, Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Gustav Aerial Spray, Unified Response, Deepwater Horizon and New Dawn. Prior to his current assignment, Colonel Sarachene was the Vice Commander, 914th Airlift Wing, Niagara Falls Air Station, New York. Prior to his assignment at Niagara Falls ARS, he was assigned to YARS from 1992 to 2014. During that time, he served as a Pilot, Instructor and Evaluator Pilot, Chief Pilot and Commander of the 910th Operations Support Squadron, 773rd Airlift Squadron and 757th Airlift Squadron, respectively. He is also a civilian pilot for Delta Air Lines based in Atlanta, Georgia.

The colonel was born in Pensacola, Florida; grew up in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, and graduated from Absegami High School in 1982. A long-time resident of Austintown, Ohio, he is the first Mahoning Valley resident to take command of YARS since at least 1981 when the 910th Tactical Airlift Group, the wing’s heritage unit, began flying the C-130 "B" model cargo aircraft.
