The 910th Airlift Wing's Outdoor Recreation office hosted a "red eye" tour to Washington D.C., May 18, 2013. A near-capacity chartered tour bus carried a group of Youngstown Air Reserve Station (YARS) personnel, family and friends to the nation's capital for a one-day whirlwind tour of many of the district's famous memorials, Arlington National Cemetery as well as the Air Force Memorial and the Pentagon 9/11 Memorial. The trip left YARS around midnight and arrived in Washington, D.C. around 6.a.m., stopping briefly en route for a comfort break. After a full day of seeing the sights in and around the District of Columbia with a mid-day lunch break, the bus headed back to Northeast Ohio, arriving back at YARS around 11 p.m.

"I think everyone had a good time. I tried to squeeze as much in as I could without having everyone feel rushed," said Jason Cohol, 910th Services Operations Assistant and trip organizer.

The tour was funded by the Air Force's Single Airman Program. The program was created to provide activities (or buy equipment for self-directed activities) that foster a strong culture, mission, and sense of community for single Airmen. Once a program has been offered to the single airmen on base and if there is room left over, then the rest of the base populous is welcome to participate.

Cohol said Outdoor Recreation is planning more activities for YARS personnel in the near future.

"Look for more fun trips this year to possibly include horseback riding, canoeing, zip lining, (a) fall foliage train ride, (a trip to) Wheeling Downs casino and Oglebay Festival of Lights," he said.
