Funeral services were held in Boardman, Ohio, Monday, Sept. 17, for James V. Carano who passed away at 76, Wednesday, Sept. 12. Jim was a former member and long-time friend and volunteer of Youngstown Air Reserve Station.

Carano served with the U.S. Air Force stationed in Libya during the Korean War and served 29 years in the Air Force Reserve as a flight mechanic on C-119 Flying Boxcar aircraft. He retired from Youngstown Air Reserve Station as a Senior Master Sgt., but continued serving his country as a volunteer.

Until a few years ago, Carano was the director of the Retiree Activities Office (RAO) at Youngstown Air Reserve Station. Staffed solely by volunteers, the RAO exists to assist and inform retired Military individuals and eligible dependents of the programs, services, procedures and policies needed to obtain their entitlements.

U.S. Air Force Reserve Capt. Scott Allen, a 910th Airlift Wing Airmen, served as the officer in charge of the military honors detail for Carano's funeral. Allen knew Carano well during his volunteer service at YARS.

"He was a really nice guy," said Allen. "He was a great giver. He was very focused on Veteran's affairs and was eager to help any veteran or retiree that contacted the RAO office regarding their benefits."

Carano leaves behind a wife of 53 years, Mary Carano (formerly Rulli), two sons, Nick (Susan) and Jim Jr., a grandson, Jonathan, and a sister, Madeline DiRusso.
The YARS family salutes his lifelong commitment to his nation.
