The recent initiation of coalition military action against extremist terrorist groups in Iraq and Syria warrants renewed emphasis on installation, facility and personal anti-terrorism and force protection measures to ensure the safety and security of our Department of Defense (DoD) components, defense critical infrastructure, personnel and communities.

A recent military intelligence bulletin advised heightened situational awareness for DoD personnel and their families regarding the use of social media. The bulletin states the Islamic State militant group is urging its followers to use social media sites or phone directory listings to identify home addresses of military personnel and their family members. The document recommends military personnel take additional precautions regarding home and online profile protection. The following are links to useful DoD cyber-security resources.

As the installation host unit here, 910th Airlift Wing leadership works in conjunction with local, state and federal partners, including first responders and emergency management agencies, to have the most situational awareness possible for any potential security threats. Most threats will be identified and mitigated through combined and coordinated community law enforcement information sharing.

DoD installation leaders, facility leaders and individual members play key roles in ensuring safety and security in communities throughout the U.S. During this period of heightened awareness, Youngstown Air Reserve Station members are asked to remain vigilant and keep an eye out for any potential threats to our installations, facilities, members, their families, our communities and our homeland.

Col. James Dignan, 910th Airlift Wing commander, encourages the 910th's Citizen Airmen and other Service members living and working in the Mahoning Valley as well as their families to maintain situational awareness while in local community settings or large gatherings and emphasized the current "See something, Say something" environment.

"Be vigilant. If you see something or someone suspicious or out of place, then say something," Dignan said. "Report the incident to your installation security personnel or the local authorities."
