After more than twenty years as an engineering support unit, the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve mission here changed Sept. 7 to a vehicle maintenance operation.

The redesignation is a result of the Commandant of the Marine Corps-directed Force Structure Review, which affects the Marine Corps Total Force, to include the Vienna Reserve Unit.

Landing Support Equipment (LSE) Company, known in the Mahoning Valley for its numerous engineering projects; has conducted training for the Reserve Marines while offering a service to the local community. Outreach projects have included developing and improving parks, baseball fields and Boy Scout Camps.

In August, LSE Company, a tenant unit at YARS, and part of the 4th Landing Support Battalion based at Fort Lewis, Wash., provided engineering support to the Boy Scouts of America in Kensington, Ohio for the fourth year. The support was needed due to camp deterioration from harsh winters and saturated springs, according to Skip Eidam, head ranger of the Buckeye Council for the Boy Scouts of America.

The unit mission was re-designated from a heavy equipment operation to a wheeled-vehicle maintenance detachment. The Marine Reserve unit is now known as Detachment - 3 (Det-3), Maintenance Company, Combat Logistics Battalion-453. Det-3 reserve personnel will conduct equipment repair by traveling to other Marine Forces Reserve (MFR) locations as part of Maintenance Support Teams. The Marines will perform repairs to equipment evacuated to the Home-Station Training Center here.
