More than 30 members of the 757th Veterans Association, current members of the 910th Airlift Wing as well as family and friends gathered to pay tribute to fallen fellow Airmen here, July 27, 2013.
The annual memorial service, held near the YARS flagpole, honors twelve individuals that were members of the heritage units of the current 757th Airlift Squadron now based here, the 757th Fighter Squadron (FS) and the 757th Tactical Airlift Squadron (TAS). The 757th FS flew A-37 Dragonfly fighter aircraft and the 757th TAS flew C-119 Flying Boxcar cargo aircraft. During the service, a roll call was conducted for the fallen Airmen and former members of the units that personally knew the deceased Servicemembers answered "Absent" after each name was called. The fallen Airmen were all killed in training accidents. Eight Airmen were killed in a C-119 crash in December 1968, two were killed in an A-37 crash in October 1972, one in an A-37 crash in November 1978 and the last Airman was killed  in an A-37 crash in March 1979. After the roll call, U.S. flags were placed at each of the three granite and bronze memorial markers located in front of the 910th Airlift Wing headquarters building. After the flags were placed, "Taps" was played to honor the fallen Airmen.
After the memorial service was concluded, the association held their annual luncheon. The lunch event was attended by more than 80 attendees.
"The association is open to anyone, military or civilian who has a tie to the air station, past or present," said retired Chief Master Sgt. Norm Vasil, a member of the association, former C-119 loadmaster and Senior Enlisted Advisor for the 757th TAS.
In addition to providing several opportunities annually for members to gather for fellowship and camaraderie, the association, celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2013, has also provided approximately $10,000 in scholarships to 910th Citizen Airmen and their families during its existence.
