Not so corny, amazing way to thank 910th Published Oct. 9, 2012 By Maj. Brent J. Davis 910 AW/PA NEW WILMINGTON, Penn. -- The 910th Airlift Wing enjoys strong community support but has never been honored the way Rob Milliron demonstrated his gratitude. Rob Milliron, owner of Irons Mill Farmstead in New Wilmington, Pa., sees Youngstown C-130H Hercules aircraft flying low-level training missions over his home each week. The rumble of the aircraft engines gives him a sense of gratitude for the Air Force Reserve and the 910th Airlift Wing. So in June, Milliron decided to express his gratitude to the 910th Airlift Wing by growing a 10-acre 910th Airlift Wing C-130 corn maze that aircrew members could see while flying their regularly scheduled training routes. "We were figuring out what we wanted to do. My father served in the Air Force in Vietnam. The C-130s come over often because we're in their flight pattern," said Milliron. He also said he wants visitors to know how he feels about Ohio's second largest military installation. "In June, I used a piece of graph paper, and drew out the pattern of a C-130 I found on-line from the 910th site. Then we planted our corn north south east and west giving it a grid appearance from the air, we go out to the field when the corn is only 3-4 inches high and we mark dots to outlay where the plane, shield and everything should be. Finally, we just connect the dots, then we can mow it or spray it until it grows to maturity," he said. The corn maze opened September 22nd. Thousands of visitors attend the fall festival at Irons Mill each year. "I decided to grow a tough corn maze because the Air Force is tough so why not have a tough corn maze to navigate," he said U.S. Air Force Colonel Bill Phillips, commander of the 910th Operations Group, went to the farmstead with his wife October 29th and presented a certificate of appreciation to the Milliron family for their support of Youngstown Air Reserve Station. According to Milliron, more than a thousand attendees walked through the corn maze the weekend of October 6-7. The Milliron's are scheduled to keep their event open to the public each weekend through October 28th.
